ANSWER KEY – Wow Goldmaking Quiz, Part II: Knowledge, Choices and Lore

Here are answer to questions 6 through 11.

6.  Choosing professions

You’re starting two toons on a new server and would like to make money with them.  You have decided to pick up four professions: herbalism, mining, alchemy, and blacksmithing.  You:

a) Go Herbalism/Alchemy and Mining/Blacksmithing. This may look smart (having the gathering and crafting profession on the same toon) but it really isn’t.  It is extremely inefficient from a gathering perspective.  Two, you can’t smelt or blacksmith out in the wilderness anyway.  Plus, you’ll end up with crafted items on different toons.  +3 pts

b) Go Herbalism/Blacksmithing and Mining/Alchemy. Minus 10 dkp.  No, seriously. -10 pts

c) Go Herbalism/Mining and Alchemy/Blacksmithing.  Top marks: you want gathering to be as efficient as possible.  Not only that, but this way you can have the other toon do all the selling of crafted items.  Efficiency in gathering and selling. +10 pts

7. Leveling for profit

Your time is limited.  You figure you can either level two toons to 85 or six toons to 60.  Being able to make money is a primary motivator for you.  So you:

a) Level the two toons to 85 and get four maxed professions. Congratulations, smartypants.  The most money to be made is on maxed professions. +10 pts

b) Level the six toons to 60 and get 12 professions to 300 skill points. No no no!  It’s true that having a broader variety of professions opens up many options.  But you’re still locked out of much of the real market. +3 pts

c) Look for nonexistent option c).  So you’re that type, eh?! I said there is no third option here. -3 pts

8. Using trade chat

How should you make money in /2?

a) Actively bark and sell ports on my mage. Terrible -5pts

b) Trick people into buying my wares at above-AH prices.  Might work… yes, some people are that lazy… but probably a waste of time.  +1pt

c) Advertise that epic I desperately want to unload! Desperation is bad, selling below market is bad.  You’re the type of person a wow mogul will buy from, then flip the item for a nice gain. -2pts

d) Advertise stuff I have in the AH, both to entice and educate buyers. This can work.  +7pts.

e) Ignore trade chat.  Life is too short and /2 is only 5% trade anyway. The time you have to spend sifting through anal murloc jokes and guild and raid recruiting spam is time you could spend making money instead. +8pts

9. Gold website recommendations

If I had to recommend gold blogging/making sites, what would they be?

Tester’s hint: “I” means “WoWMidas,” not “you”

a) Foo, The Undermine Journal, Consortium Forums, Wowhead. These are some of the best resources out there for frequency and/or utility. +10 pts

b) Cold, JM2C. High frequency blogs, these two are motherhood and apple pie (I’ll let you decide which is which).  They’re a treasure trove if you like frequent ideas and can sift the great gems from the Rocky Mountain oysters, but beginner beware…they can be a wild goose chase if your impulse is to blindly follow suggestions. +5 pts

c) Critical, WoWMidas, AH Addict  These I like, but they are either defunct or too infrequent.  +2 pts

d) MMO melting pot, Big Bear Butt. I like these blogs, but NEWSFLASH!: they aren’t sites with gold insights.  -15 pts

10. Buying gold

Time for the ethics question of the quiz:

You’re an aspiring and budding gold mogul.  For you, buying gold

a) would be a fair way to achieve your goal.  You must be out of your mind.  I’m agnostic on the ethics of buying gold, but if you’re using real life money to achieve a gold-making goal in game, you’re cuckoo. -20 pts

b) should be avoided.  Yes, you could get hacked.  +8pts

c) would be stupid.  Yeah.  Kinda like playing yourself in Monopoly and congratulating yourself on winning. +10pts

Extra credit:

11. Constraint identification

What two factors are the most serious constraints a wow gold mogul faces?

a) Time and capital.  No.  Time is critical, but capital is not a constraint.  Building a leverageable stash is pretty easy.  Simply save money – which is the whole idea – and relatively quickly, you’ll find that you can’t spend your money fast enough to make it go away. +2 pts

b) Time and knowledge. Ding! Ding! Ding!! Both are critical.  +10 pts

c) Infrastructure and knowledge.  Knowledge is critical and infrastructure is important.  Having plenty of bag space and add-ons is very helpful.  Having your own guild bank(s) is good too.  But time is still more important than infrastructure.  +7 pts

Interpreting your score

If you scored

100+ points: You have the Midas touch, friend

75-99 points: /bow+curtsey…. I have little to teach you…mogulize and prosper!

50-74 points: You need to work on your goldmaking technique.  Report to this website daily.

25-49 points:   I hope for your sake that you’re new at this goldmaking thang.

1-24 points:   You should focus on your secondary skillz, bro.  I hear the scenery is lovely in Northrend these days…how about some peaceful fishing?

<0 points: You, my friend, will never be average!  Smartass or dumbass, I’m not sure which!

Did you know… that including the extra credit, it’s possible to get 100 points on this quiz on knowledge alone (and to score 126 through hands-on experience)?  It’s also possible to end up at -85!

So how did you do?  Share your results below!
